The Secretary of Congress of the South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) in the Free State, Monyatsi Mahlatsi, says deep divisions in the African National Congress (ANC), are negatively affecting the delivery of basic services in the province.

He was part of engagements that the ANC Provincial Interim Leadership Structure organised. Former ANC president Thabo Mbeki was invited to oversee the proceedings.

Mahlatsi says a solution must be found and implemented soon.

“We have a number of issues that we have raised, key to those issues is the impact of the spill-overs of the fights facing the ANC and the impact it has on our members as workers as well as they being community members when the impact of the ANC divisions is felt at the level of service delivery.”

The party has experienced huge divisions in the province since 2012.

On Thursday, Mbeki told the SABC that his presence in the province seeks to “relax” things in the ANC.

ANC Women’s League Deputy President Sisi Ntombela expressed confidence that things will soon change for the better in the ANC in the Free State.

Currently, the ANC has an Interim Leadership Structure in the Free State, led by Mxolisi Dukwana, since the leadership of the province was disbanded after it was learnt that it was illegally constituted.

More engagements on the issue of unity and renewal will continue through to Saturday.
