Free bus transport for pensioners and people with disabilities

Pensioners and people with disabilities will soon be able to enjoy free bus transport during off-peak hours in the City of Johannesburg.

This comes after the council unanimously passed a motion to that effect last week.

The council expects that the programme be fully implemented by the 2019-2020 financial year. Congress of the People (COPE) councillor Devanand Maharaj says he tabled the motion.

“Pensioners and people with disabilities have been paying rates and taxes right throughout their lives, so I think as local government it’s an initiative that I would like to drive going forward, to say it’s something we have to give back to the people out there.”

Maharaj further expound on the possible difference this motion will make for pensioners and people with disabilities alike.

“Their lives are going to change because they’ll be mobile. They can travel around in off peak hours. They can be given opportunities in life as well. They can do their shopping. They’ll be free to do what they want in off peak hours.”

Maharaj also implores stakeholders to, “come on board if they can offer transportation in any form to pensioners and people with disabilities.”
