Four people have died while 23 others sustained serious injuries in a collision involving two vehicles on the R61 road in Aberdeen in the Eastern Cape towards Beaufort West in the Western Cape on Monday.

Spokesperson for the Department of Transport, Unathi Binqose says midibus Sprinter with 27 occupants collided with a quantum with 10 occupants.

Four people died on the scene while 23 were rushed to a nearby hospital.

Binqose says that overloading and reckless driving were the main cause of the accident.

“It’s only those people that were in the midbus that perished and sustained injuries. Four died on the scene but 23 sustained injuries. MEC for Transport Weziwe Tikana-Hxothiwe would like to urge road users, motorists in particular, to continue being extra vigilant on our roads to avoid avoidable accidents like the one we just witnessed this morning,” adds Binqose.
