The FW de Klerk Foundation has confirmed that the country’s former President, Frederik Willem de Klerk, has been hospitalised.
The Foundation says the 82-year-old was admitted on Friday due to an abnormal collection of air in the pleural space between his lung and chest wall.
The statesman has since been treated and is expected to be discharged next week. He underwent a successful procedure on Saturday morning.

On Friday night, De Klerk was expected to attend the book launch of retired US Assistant Secretary of State for Africa, Amabassador Herman J. Cohen.
Cohen worked with him and former President Nelson Mandela during the time when South Africa was transitioning into a non-racial democracy.
He however cancelled, with the Chairperson of his Foundation Dave Steward standing in for him.
