Former Eskom chairperson alleges Guptas threatened to get him fired

Former Eskom board chairperson, Zola Tsotsi, has alleged that Tony Gupta threatened to sack him during a meeting in 2015.

Tsotsi says the threat followed Public Enterprises Minister Lynne Brown’s warning against him interfering in management issues at the power utility.

Tsotsi was the board chairperson from 2011 and stepped down in 2015.

He was speaking during a Parliamentary inquiry into allegations of corruption, governance failures and mismanagement of state funds at Eskom.

He says Tony Gupta requested to meet with him and at the meeting, Tony said: “Chairman you are not helping us with anything. We are the ones who put you in the position you are in. We are the ones who can take you out.”

His reponse: “Do what you have to do and let me carry on with the job that the Cabinet appointed me to do.”

Tsotsi says that ended that meeting.

He says: “It is at this time that I felt that some sinister clouds are gathering because the coincidence of the two events was not lost on me.”
