The oldest surviving Comrades Marathon winner, Jackie Mekler, has passed away at the age of 87.
Very sad news that Jackie Mekler passed away peacefully in his sleep last night. Mekler was probably the greatest ultra runner of his era, winning Comrades 5 times & the Korkie 6 (the Two Oceans of its day). RIP Jackie, you led an inspiring life and left a legacy to be proud of. pic.twitter.com/O7vnQGDUOd

Mekler won the Ultimate Human Race between Durban and Pietermaritzburg five times.
The first time in 1958 and the last time in 1968.
He completed it 12 times and collected 10 gold, one silver and one bronze medal.
I’m deeply saddened by the news that @ComradesRace great, Jackie Mekler has passed away. Jackie was my hero when I was watching Comrades as a child & to have been able to get to know him as a friend in the last 20 years or so, I regard as a great honour. R.I.P. my friend. pic.twitter.com/6pPKhJMpMJ

He recently published a book titled “Running Alone”.
Spoke to the 87-yr old Jackie Mekler: 5 times Comrades winner, 1st runner under 6-hours. He said it took him 45 years to write this book. pic.twitter.com/yydJbmUtMV

It was launched at this year’s Comrades Expo, and was met with great enthusiasm, support and admiration. The first print of the book was sold out within three days.
