The Eastern Cape Transport Department says five people have been killed in a crash on the R56 between Middleburg and Steynsbeg in the Eastern Cape.

Ten others have been critically injured and taken to a nearby hospital. The Department says the road is closed following the crash.

Spokesperson, Unathi Bhinqose says it is disturbing that this crash comes as national Transport Month is launched.

“We can confirm that a total of five people have unfortunately passed away in an accident on R56, between Middleburg and Steynsbeg. We are told that another 10 people are seriously injured and have been rushed to nearby hospitals.”

“The road remains closed to traffic as our rescue and emergency personnel are still on the scene trying to clear the wreckage and trying to piece together what led to the accident.”
