Fish River Canoe Marathon continues despite drought

The annual Fish River Canoe Marathon in Cradock in the Eastern Cape is still one of the main sporting events despite drought in some parts of the region.

The 38th edition of the marathon featuring some of the country’s strongest K2 combinations started early on Friday.

This has been made possible by a guaranteed water supply from the Grassridge Dam near Hofmeyer.

Fish River Canoe Marathon chairperson, Roy Copeman, says the Department of Water and Sanitation has played an important role in the event.

“We have put an order with Water Affairs and throughout the years and forever since I can remember they release 26 cubics of water and that is maintained year after year. Water Affairs has been very forthcoming. We have a good relationship with them,” says Copeman.
