First Pfizer BioNtech COVID-19 vaccines manufactured in SA expected in the third quarter

The first locally-manufactured Pfizer BioNtech COVID-19 vaccines are expected to start rolling off the production line at Cape Town’s Biovac Institute by the third quarter of this year.

The pharmaceutical giant says its satisfied with the progress made by Biovac over the past few months, since the agreement to collaborate.

Pfizer’s regional President for Africa and the Middle East, Patrick van der Loo, has conducted a site visit at the Institute

“Biovac has been moving at what we call light speed in order to get ready to receive drug product from the Pfizer sites both in Belgium and Germany and to get ready to start treating that product to make sure that the vials get out to patients in the African Union.”
