Firefighters still battling Boland fires

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Efforts to extinguish a mountain fire in Du Toitskloof near Worcester are still underway.  The fire broke out in the Boland on Saturday.

Three helicopters which battled the blaze have since been withdrawn.

A crew of 60 firefighters and volunteers are still on the scene trying to douse the accessible lines from the ground. Two active fire lines are still burning high up in the mountain.

Authorities say there is no danger to property at present.

The steep slopes, however, pose a possible risk to firefighters. The Western Cape Disaster Management has also warned of dry, hot conditions and strong winds increasing the risk of fires.

Firefighting teams are monitoring weather conditions as an increase in wind speed could hamper their efforts.

People have been warned to take extra care over the next few weeks to prevent fires and to report fires immediately.
