Firefighers continue to battle raging Karatara blaze

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Western Cape Disaster Management says fires have been raging on throughout the night in Karatara area of Knysna in the Western Cape.

Seven people including two toddlers have been killed in the fires. Wild fires have been raging in the George and Karatara area since last week, leading to evacuations on Monday.

The fires have been fanned by strong winds and heat.

More than 300 firefighters are on the ground battling the blazes.

Disaster Management spokesperson James Brent-Styan says the conditions are terrible.

“The terrain is very difficult. The conditions are very difficult because a lot of bad wind makes flying impossible so we couldn’t rely on water bombing from the air; and then of course all the smoke. It’s just terrible, visibility is very, very poor and a lot of the smoke is blowing into the town as well. So it’s not a fun place to be at the moment.”
