Firefighters and emergency personnel are still at the scene of a fire which broke out in the Jacobs area, south of Durban, in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

According to spokesperson for KwaZulu-Natal Emergency Medical Services Robert McKenzie, the fire has been extinguished, however there is still a lot of smoke in the air.

He says just one person was treated at the scene.

“The building was used as a storage area. The building itself as well as an open air storage facility caught alight and has been completely destroyed by the fire. The fire is currently extinguished with firefighters just damping down hot-spots that are flaring up. There’s still quite a bit of smoke rising up out of the ashes. Fortunately nobody was injured in the fire itself, however paramedics from KZN emergency medical service did treat one community member who injured themselves after falling when running away from the smoke”.
