Fire damages five structures in Fairy Glen, Worcester

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Authorities in the Western Cape have reported a fire in the Fairy Glen area of Worcester, causing damage to five structures. The blaze, which ignited yesterday in the Brandwacht area above the town, continues to burn out of control in two separate areas.

Cape Winelands District Municipality spokesperson Joanne Otto says the fire swiftly spread to flat areas where structures were located.

Otto noted that the fire initially started on Monday in Kluitjieskraal, Wolseley, and now has two active lines.

“In the areas of both these fires, there are large areas where the active fires have been contained, but the ground remains very hot. Combined with the hot weather conditions, this increases the likelihood of flare-ups,” says Otto.

Fire crews are currently engaged in crucial monitoring and mopping-up operations in the affected areas.

However, Otto emphasized that the situation remains precarious, and residents are urged to remain vigilant.

As a precautionary measure, the Bain’s Kloof Pass has been restricted to fire vehicles and residents only. Motorists are advised to seek alternative routes and to refrain from stopping on the road to view firefighting operations. This practice obstructs the flow of traffic and could impede emergency response efforts.

The Western Cape authorities continue to closely monitor the situation and deploy resources to contain the fire effectively. Residents and motorists are reminded to prioritize safety and adhere to all directives issued by emergency services personnel.
