Fight against AIDS gets a boost

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The South African National AIDS Council (SANAC) says the adoption of a political declaration to accelerate AIDS response in the next five years, gives a new boost to the fight against the pandemic.

South Africa will focus on preventing new HIV infections in young girls and high-risk groups like sex workers, gay men and injecting drug users. This has emerged as global leaders converged at the UN General Assembly to discuss HIV/AIDS.

SANAC Fareed Abdullah says to have a formal declaration adopted by 190 countries gives the HIV response a new boost.

“Now that we have the political backing for all these projects in Durban, we need to provide the detail of how we are actually going to implement those things. We have done so well in SA, especially on treatment and on prevention of HIV transmission in pregnancy and really the whole world has recognised it here. The Minister of Health has been the star of the show here.”
