Fifty-fifty gender policy soon non-existent in SA: Makhosi Khoza

Reading Time: < 1 minute

African Democratic Change (ADeC) leader Makhosi Khoza says the fifty-fifty gender policy is rapidly being reversed in the country and will be non-existent soon. She says women’s issues are not recognised in the country’s political agenda.

Khoza was speaking at an event commemorating International Women’s Day in Johannesburg on Thursday. She also spoke about how she was persecuted in the African National Congress for speaking out against former President Jacob Zuma, but says no action was taken against men who had also spoken out against Zuma.

“Out of the eight premiers that the ANC has under its control, seven are men only one is a woman and it is Northern Cape. This 50/50 gender policy is being reversed at an alarming speed and it is consistent with what is happening on the continent. You know we make these gains and we shift backwards all the time. The rapid nature, in which we shift backwards, bothers me a lot.”
