Farming community is key election stakeholder: Tlakula

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The farming community is a very important stake holder as the majority of South African voters work and live on the farms, says Independent Electoral Commission Chairperson Advocate Pansy Tlakula.

This comes after a pledge was signed with farm owners and workers.

The pledge binds farm owners to give workers time off to go and vote in this years general elections.

Speaking on Morning Live ,Tlakula says it is important for the IEC to engage with stakeholders when approaching election time.
She says in the past there have been complaints from farm workers about not being given time off to cast their votes.

Tlakula says this is what brought about the idea of a pledge whereby farmers commit themselves to giving workers time off.
She says this is the third year of signing this pledge.

She also says unions requested more engagements with the IEC and farmers to make sure the pledge does not just remain on paper but that it is adhered to.

This engagement is a first of a series of engagements with all stakeholders says Tlakula.

She says business owners will be next, as they also need to grant their employees time off to register and vote.
