Family speak out after body left at Old Mutual offices

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The family of a man whose body was left at an Old Mutual office at KwaDukuza north of Durban says it was driven by the insurance company’s delay to pay a funeral claim.

A video, that has gone viral on social media, shows two women loading a body into the back of a vehicle after saying that the company had finally paid out the claim.

The family says it went to the insurance company’s KwaDukuza offices north of Durban to make a claim last Monday but did not receive payment for a week.

The insurance company was supposed to pay out within 48 hours. Ntombenhle Mhlongo, relative of the late Sifiso Mtshali, says what the insurance company did was cruel.

“We put the claim at Old Mutual on Monday. We waited from Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, we went to the office to do a follow up they said we must give them time, they are still assessing. On Friday we went back to them then they said we must give them two to three hours and then it’s when we got frustrated and we gave them the body because they telling us they are still assessing but they don’t tell us what exactly they are assessing. They told us to borrow money, we asked them where we gonna borrow money because no one is working at home. I suggested to them to borrow us money when the claim comes out they deduct their money. They said what if the money does not come out.”

Meanwhile, Old Mutual has issued an apology to the family.
