Unknown gunmen have opened fire on a family and robbed them as they were leaving the Pavilion shopping centre, west of Durban, on Saturday.
Police spokesperson, Nqobile Gwala says the robbers got away with a bag with an undisclosed amount of cash as well as a cell phone.
Gwala says the robbers struck when the family was about to drive through a boom gate at the exit of a parking lot.
She says they also shot at a security guard who approached them as they were fleeing.
The police are still looking for the suspects.
A case of robbery was opened at Westville police station.
