Factionalism and political infighting within the African National Congress (ANC) have prevented the Mangaung Metro from electing a mayor for 12 months.

This is according to the Free State ANC Interim Provincial Committee.

Current Council speaker, Mxolisi Siyonzana, has emerged as a favourite after being interviewed by the ANC’s National Executive Committee (NEC).

He is an ANC heavyweight in the province and was the ANC chairperson in the Mangaung region.

Free State ANC Interim Provincial Committee Coordinator Paseka Nompondo says Siyonzana is their preferred mayoral candidate.

“The three names that were recommended are comrade Mxolisi Siyonzana, comrade Mapaseka Nkoane and comrade Millicent Motingoe. All candidates demonstrated capacity at the interview on matters related to ANC policy, broad local government issues, challenges facing Mangaung Metro Municipality and possible solutions.”

“They all performed well and the national officials of the ANC then decided [that] comrade Mxolisi Siyonzana would be the ANC candidate for the mayoral position in Mangaung,” adds Nompondo.
