F State Municipality to celebrate Human Rights Day through music

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The Metsimaholo Local Municipality will celebrate Human Rights Day with an annual music festival on Saturday in Sasolburg, Free State.

The purpose of the festival is to mobilise and educate people about their rights to live in dignity and peace.

The proceeds of the festival will also help the less fortunate young girls with sanitary towels.

One of the organisers, Tumi Moatshe says no young girl should be deprived of education because she cannot afford sanitary towels.

“We will be able to celebrate the day and commemorate ‘Sharpeville Massacre’ which took place in 1960. And the most important thing we will be able to enhance and celebrate the corner stone of our democracy including what we need to ascend the human rights to freedom. We celebrate the Sharpeville, we celebrate Boipatong,” adds Moatshe.

Meanwhile, the main Human Rights Day ceremony is under way at the Sharpeville Cricket field in the Vaal.

Hundreds of people are attending.

Sharpeville is where at least 69 people were killed in 1960, as they held a peaceful protest against the pass laws.

Deputy President David Mabuza will give the keynote address shortly.
