External experts to lead SABC Commissions of Inquiry

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The SABC says two independent external experts will be appointed to lead the two high-level Commissions of Inquiry at the public broadcaster.

The commissions, which will begin their work on Friday, will delve into editorial interference and sexual harassment as well as various forms of unlawful conduct.

The SABC says the decision was taken to institute the inquiries in order to restore the integrity of the broadcaster.

The approach to the two high-level inquiries is more restorative then punitive.

SABC Acting Group Ceo, Nomsa Philiso says they expect a draft report from the inquiries by August.

She says: “It is not just about political interference, we  are looking at interference in a broad sense. We are looking at NGOs, we are looking at business people, we looking at a range of things that could have potentially put pressure on any SABC news person to do anything that is out of line. The news inquiry commission will be chaired by Dr Joe Tlholoe and he will be assisted by a legal firm.”

“What we hope to achieve is that on August 8 we will hopefully be looking at a draft report. Between the 1st and the 15th it’s a call for people to bring in their testimonies then we will see how small or how big this is.”

Philiso says the commissions are open to complaints from everyone, including the public.

She says that they will not be conducted in the open in order to protect the confidentiality and anonymity of those involved.
