Extensive work under way to reduce rolling blackouts: Ramaphosa

President Cyril Ramaphosa says extensive efforts are being made to reduce rolling blackouts. In his weekly letter, the President says this includes efforts such as returning units at Eskom’s Kusile and Medupi power stations to service on time.

Nineteen litigants including unions and opposition parties have taken Ramaphosa to the Constitutional Court over rolling blackouts.

In papers filed in reply to the legal challenge, Ramaphosa said that it did not constitute a dereliction of duty on his part or that of the national government as the law placed the responsibility for electricity provision on municipalities.

President Ramaphosa says while these initiatives give the government confidence that they will end rolling blackouts, they will take time to show results.

This comes as Electricity Minister Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa unveiled his energy plan aimed at reducing the rolling blackouts at the weekend.

Meanwhile, as we enter the winter period with the demand expected to increase, Ramaphosa says South Africans will have to manage their use of electricity through energy-saving solutions such as switching off home appliances that use a lot of electricity during peak time.
