Hasan and Husain Essop, the 2014 Standard Bank Young Artist Award winners for Visual Art, represent only themselves in their panoramic photographs set in Cape Town.
“We chose ourselves because, if there’s any questioning that will happen on the Day of Judgment, we take complete ownership. We do feel, however, we have something to say and this is our way of saying it. We still do feel very guilty,” Husain says.

Despite the personal nature of their photographs, the images deal with broader issues such as identity, economic marginalisation, gangsterism, global Islam and media portrayals of it.
