Ethiopian Sintayheu Yinesu has won the forty-two kilometre race at the 2018 Mandela Marathon in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands. It was his first attempt at the race.

This year’s race was run in particular celebration of  Madiba’s centenary year.

Mabuthile Lebopo from Lesotho came in second place followed by Kenya’s Mark Oyugu in third.

Kenyan Loice Jebet won the women’s leg of the race. Speaking shortly after her win at the finish line, Jebet speaks about parts in the race she found challenging.

Meanwhile, Transport Minister Blade Nzimande says the race is growing in popularity and could one day even eclipse the Comrades Marathon in terms of numbers.

Nzimande completed his maiden five kilometre race of the marathon.
