Eskom has welcomed the gazetting of the much-anticipated guidelines which will allow private companies and entities to generate up to 100 megawatts of electricity, many using solar and wind power, without a licence.

The Department of Energy finally gazetted schedule two of the Electricity Regulation Act. In June President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) would lift the threshold for licencing private power generation from one to 100 Megawatts.

The announcement was welcomed by businesses which pointed out that the move offered the kind of policy certainty that would encourage investment.

Eskom spokesperson Sikhonathi Mantshantsha says, “Eskom welcomes the amendment of Section 2 of the Electricity Regulation Act by the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) to allow the operation of a generation facility with a capacity of up to 100MW without obtaining a licence from the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa).

“This is a progressive step that will – over time – greatly assist in the effort to provide reliable and sufficient electricity for the economy while creating space for Eskom to conduct much-needed repairs on its infrastructure.”

Meanwhile, Eskom has commenced load reduction in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Free State, Limpopo and North West.
