Eskom has warned that municipalities in the Northern Cape will face more power cuts in the future if they default on payments to the power utility.
This as power supply was reinstated to the embattled Phokwane Municipality at Hartswater following payment.
The municipality had been without power since last week.
Eskom spokesperson Khulu Phasiwe says the power utility is keeping an eye on the rising provincial debt.
“We can confirm that Phokwane municipality has now done the right thing, they have made the payment yesterday. We will however, continue to monitor how they handle their account. In total in that province of the Northern Cape the municipalities owe Eskom just over R900 million. We have quite a number of them which include Phokwane and Dikgatlong and many others that we are looking into. We will continue to monitor them but if they do default, yes we will interrupt their power supply.”
