Eskom has tabled a revised offer of a 6.2 % increase to unions. This is after unions rejected the power utility’s last offer of 5%.

In terms of the new offer Eskom will increase workers’ salaries by 6.2% in the first year and 6% in the subsequent two years.

The three major unions, National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa), National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and Solidarity have agreed to consult with their members on the new offer and will give feedback on Friday next week.

The unions were demanding a 9% increase.

“Under any normal procedures an offer that is different from the previous offer tabled, we need to go back to the members and get a mandate so I want to put it very clear that we don’t go back to pursue the workers, we go back to give feedback to the members so that they must give us the mandate , then after they have given us the mandate, we will come back to the wage negations and will then table what the mandate from our member is,” says Num’s Wiliam Mabapa.
