Eskom suspends load shedding

Eskom has announced the suspension of load shedding. This comes as the demand for electricity has dropped ahead of the long weekend.

On Tuesday, Eskom to implemented load shedding Stage 2 starting at 22:00 overnight until 05:00, again on Wednesday night.

However, the embattled power utility continues to urge consumers to use electricity sparingly as the system remains vulnerable and unstable.

Spokesperson Sikonathi Mantshantsha says the power utility will use the lower demand opportunity to replenish the emergency generation reserves in preparation for the higher demand expected during January as economic activity resumes.

“During this period Eskom will also continue to pursue increased reliability maintenance as planned and previously communicated this will put pressure on the generation plant, maintenance is necessary in order to improve the reliability and performance of the power stations. We currently have 9 170MW on planned maintenance, while another 11 334MW capacity is unavailable due to breakdowns. We are working to restore these machines to service. ”

In September, Eskom resolved to suspend the managers of both the Tutuka and Kendal power stations in Mpumalanga, pending disciplinary hearings after implementing Stage 4 load shedding:
