Eskom has confirmed that unit one of its Kendal power station in Mpumalanga has tripped due to a fire that has caused the failure of a generator transformer.
Units two and three have been shut down under controlled conditions.
The fire has damaged the cables to the main cooling water system on the west side of the power station.
Eskom spokesperson Sikonathi Mantshantsha says all personnel who were on site have been safely evacuated.
