Eskom promises to keep lights amid unions’ concerns

Reading Time: < 1 minute

No large-scale electricity outages are expected, despite social media messages to this effect that are being widely circulated.

Unions, National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa and National Union of Mineworkers have not announced any strike, but they intend to hold a demonstration at Eskom’s Megawatt Park offices in Johannesburg on Thursday.

The unions are protesting against the power utility’s failure to offer any pay increase. Unions are demanding a 15% increase.

Eskom has said it has contingency plans in place to ensure the power supply is not affected.

General Secretary of Numsa, Irvin Jim says Eskom’s cash-flow problems are perpetuated by a bloated management structure and it’s  austerity measures are an attack on workers.
