Reading Time: 2 minutes

Eskom has announced that it is implementing stage four load shedding from 2pm this afternoon until 5am Saturday.

Eskom says stage two load shedding will then be implemented until 5am on Monday.

The power utility says a number of generating units at Tutuka, Kendal and Matimba have gone down.

Earlier Friday, The power utility said a unit at Lethabo and Majuba was delayed in returning to service and the one in Tutuka tripped. Three Kendal units were also taken off and it is anticipated that the fourth and remaining unit will also be shut down.

Eskom spokesperson Sikonathi Mantshantsha says, “The conveyor belts supplying these units are currently not running due to a power fault. No coal is reaching the station at this point. We, unfortunately, do expect the load shedding stage to escalate into the weekend as soon as we have a better understanding of when these problems will be resolved.”

Manthsantsha also said the power utility is also trying to preserve diesel stocks.
