Environmental groups are up in arms against energy regulator Nersa’s announcement that the public hearings into controversial Turkish company Karpowership’s plan to bring floating Liquified Natural Gas ships to the country.
It’s part of the energy department’s Risk Mitigation Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme to add more energy capacity to the national grid.

Strategic lead of lobby group Green Connection, Liziwe Mcdaid says that the proposed date of the 25th of March is too soon and has not allowed them sufficient time to collate all the voices of the affected communities.

“We were not aware of it and we had provided comment into the Karpower gas licences at the beginning of March. We were not told and it’s impossible to think how communities participate with only one or two days’ notice, so this seems a very strange procedure and the impact is to undermine public consultation and we call on Nersa to withdraw this and put forth a proper process.”

Meanwhile, energy regulator Nersa has denied the accusations of impropriety in issuing out a notice of public hearings to be held on Karpowership, licence approval hearings.
Karpowership was selected as a preferred bidder to provide 1 220MW of emergency power to the tune of over R200 billion over the next 20 years.

Nersa communication head, Charles Hlebela says the public hearing to be held on the 25th of March are a critical opportunity for communities to have their say.

“Nersa can confirm that the public hearing that was scheduled for the 18th March to consider the Karpowership licence applications have been moved to the 25th via MS Teams and members of the public must submit their submissions to publichearings@nersa.org.za. The closing day for submissions is the 23rd March.”
