The National Environmental Affairs Department says wildlife crime remains a serious challenge although there is slight decrease of rhino poaching in the Kruger National Park.

Speaking at the four-day national environmental compliance conference that is underway in White River in Mpumalanga, the Departmental Chief Director, Frances Craige says the challenge of poaching is still huge in other provinces.

“I think if we look at the statistics in 2016 financial year, we did see a decrease in terms of rhino poaching, I think so in that year it was 140 rhinos compared to the previous year when we 1175 rhinos that we poached for 2017, we have however in little bit increase in other provinces, so although the rhinos poaching with the Kruger National Park has come down we have seen in KwaZulu-Natal for instance, North West province and in the Eastern Cape,” says Craige.
