England dominate day one of third Ashes cricket test against Australia

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Day one of the third Ashes cricket test between hosts Australia and England at the WACA in Perth, belonged to the touring side.

An unbroken 174-runsfifth wicket partnership between former Paarl Boys High pupil, Dawid Malan and Jonny Bairstow guided their team to 305 for the loss of four wickets at stumps.

The start of the third test was over shadowed by allegations of match fixing.

Despite taking the rumours extremely serious, the International Cricket Council and Cricket Australia maintained there was no evidence suggests any players or officials were under suspicion.

With England 2-nil down, the touring side came into the match needing a win to keep alive their hopes of a series win.

The match marked Alastair Cook’s 150th test cap for his country.

However, there was little to celebrate for him in the morning session — Cook only managed seven runs before he trapped leg before by Mitchell Starc.

England managed to add 63 runs, before Australia picked up their second and final wicket of the morning session — Josh Hazlewood responsible for the scalp of James Vince just before lunch.

Despite having lost two partners, Mark Stoneman offered some resistances for the visiting side going on to register a half century from 82 deliveries.

The bowlers had a slight upper hand in the middle session.

The quicks peppered the batsmen with fast, short pitched bowling and that ultimately led to the key wicket of captain Joe Root.

The skipper’s dismissal was followed by that of Stoneman, a bit of a debatable decision at first after the video umpire overturned the on-field decision without clear evidence on hot-spot.

However, later video evidence showed the ball brushing the glove of Stoneman.

If the second session of the first day belonged to the bowlers, the third was all about the batsmen.

The pair of Malan and Bairstow added 130 runs to their team’s total in the final session.

Malan in particularly was impressive with the bat, becoming the first English batsman to score a hundred in this year’s Ashes and finished the day unbeaten on 110.

Bairstow will resume on 75 on day two.
