England dominant against Bangladesh at T20 World Cup

Reading Time: 3 minutes

England thrashed Bangladesh by eight wickets with 35 balls to spare in a Group 1 clash at the ICC T20 World Cup in Abu Dhabi. Bangladesh chose to bat first and scored 124 for nine in their 20 overs, while England bludgeoned 126 for 2 in response, for the victory. South Africa still needs to play both teams in the tournament and on current form will be tested by both England and Bangladesh.

Bangladesh and England opted to take the knee ahead of their World Cup Group 1 clash in the fight against racism. England top Group 1 with a stellar net run rate thanks to their trouncing of the West Indies by 6 wickets with 70 balls to spare.

Moeen Ali struck twice in two balls in the third over to remove the Bangladeshi openers, Liton Das and Mohammad Naim, and Bangladesh were forced to start again.

England seam bowler, Chris Woakes made a big breakthrough in the 6th over with Adil Rashid taking a superb catch, and Bangladesh’s dangerous all-rounder, Shakib Al Hasan was out for an underwhelming four runs. Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah put on a much-needed 37 runs for the fourth wicket before England went back to their spinners, and Liam Livingstone broke the partnership, sending Rahim back to the dressing room for 29 off 30 deliveries.

Afif Hossain was run out for 5, with Bangladesh guilty of breaking a cardinal rule, running on a miss-field, and further compounding their woes. Mahmudullah felt the pressure on his shoulders, and as he tried to accelerate, he went for shot he should not have, Woakes took the catch and Livingstone, the part-timer, had another wicket. Bangladesh’s last hope gone for 19.

Tymal Mills took the wicket of Mahedi Hasan for 11 and there was no breathing room at all for the Bangladeshi batters.

But credit to the Tigers, they went down swinging. Nasum Ahmed hit two sixes in the penultimate over, and finished on an unbeaten 19. However, Mills was back at it in the final over, taking two wickets with the final two balls to finish with 3 wickets for 27 runs. Bangladesh were able to see out their 20 overs scoring 124 for the loss of nine wickets.

In reply, Jason Roy and Jos Buttler got stuck in immediately for England, chasing down 125 for the win. The Bangladeshi bowlers are still a work in progress under Ottis Gibson, and it showed.

Bangladesh got a breakthrough when Buttler bit off more than he could chew, and was caught trying to go over extra cover, out for 18. Roy was unfazed and got straight back to sending the ball to all corners of the ground.

The England opener linked up with Dawid Malan, and the pair kept the run rate ticking along at a very healthy clip. Roy brought up his 2nd half-century in T20 World Cups and the seventh of his career with a cleanly struck six. He would go on to top score with 61 runs off 38 balls and put his side in very good shape.

Jonny Bairstow hit the winning runs as England scored 126 for the loss of 2 wickets, for an 8 wicket victory with 35 balls remaining.

England made it two wins from two matches with a vastly superior net run rate over every other side in Group 1, while for Bangladesh it was their second loss in two matches played.
