Emulate political icons: Mantashe

Reading Time: 2 minutes

ANC Secretary General Gwede Mantashe has urged his party members, including alliance partners, to emulate the leadership qualities of political icons, Moses Kotane and JB Marks.

Mantashe made this challenge during a Memorial Lecture for Moses Kotane and JB Marks at Vryburg in North-West on Saturday.
He says ANC members must have robust debates about contentious issues and not just discuss their own future political positions.

He says: “Our problem comrades is that we are lazy to read, we are lazy to debate politics all the time. We only go to meetings and discuss positions and what we don’t appreciate is that the less we read the less we get dedicated to educate ourselves and the weaker the ANC becomes and the less the capacity for the ANC govern.”

“If we want to improve our situation we must read and never fear to present what we have written for it to be criticised,” he adds.
He urged his party members within the province, including their leadership to uphold the legacy of both Kotane and Marks.

“North West comrades this is the province of JB Marks, this is the province of Moses Kotane. This is the province of Essop Pahad, it is the province of Arhmed Kathrada. It is the province of Ruth Mompati but it is one of the most factionalised province for some strange reasons. If as comrades we are not appreciating that, we will be busy as the generation destroying the historic role played by this province in the revolution, nobody will remember it,” says Mantashe.
