Reading Time: 2 minutes

Emotions ran high at the joint funeral service of two North West police officers whose charred remains were found last week. They disappeared while attending to a stock theft incident in Mareetsane near Mahikeng.

In his eulogy, Police Minister Bheki Cele emphasised the need to improve the police’s tactical response to defend themselves against criminality and attacks.

SABC News Sentleeng Lehihi reports:

A somber mood, as the heart-wrenching cries of the families of Sergeant Mojalefa Molete and Constable Simon Ntsekeletsa reverberated through the church.

Kenneth Gagane is a representative of the Molete family had this to say, “As the Molete family all we can do is give thanks for all the support you gave us.”

While Jimmy Ntsekeletsa spoke for the Ntsekeletsa family, “We had lost hope but we give thanks to the police and the chaplain for showing us that we are not alone.”

In his eulogy, Police Minister Bheki Cele bemoaned the killing of police. He expressed a need for better tactical response training for police so that they can better protect themselves in the line of duty.

“It doesn’t help to come here and bury these police and leave these criminals flourishing out there. It’s important that we work together to flush out criminality. We have to improve the technical training of our police. I have raised this thing time and again. Police can’t just be murdered by criminals.”

Minister Bheki Cele briefs media at a joint funeral service for the two slain police officers:

Five suspects, including a father and his minor child, have been arrested in connection with the killing of the two officers.
