Thick plumes of smoke can still be seen indicating that the area is still not safe.

Reports from the scene indicate that the building is still alight. Durban Metro police have urged motorists to use alternative routes.

Metro police spokesperson Parboo Sewpersadh, “Motorists are urged to stay away from the following road closures Anton Lembede and Brooke, Pixley Kaseme and Williams road. Motorists are urged to comply with police officers’ instructions.”

On Friday, several people including a baby were rescued by firefighters from the burning building.

All those who were trapped inside the China Mall building when it caught fire on Pixley Ka Seme Street previously known as West Street in the Durban CBD were rescued.

Paramedics said the three people, who were rescued from the upper floors of the building, were taken to hospital.
