Politicians and the community of Gelvandale in Port Elizabeth gathered on Wednesday to engage on key issues before the polls on May 8.

A panel of political party representatives spoke to the community about the changes that will be made if voted in power.

Statistics indicate that the Bethelsdorp area is ranked among the top 30 most dangerous areas in South Africa, while Gelvandale, also in the northern areas of Port Elizabeth tops the national list for attempted murder. The number of gang-related murders in the suburb has risen since last year.  The area is plagued with poverty and social economic issues which contribute to crime.

Last year, Minister of Police Bheki Cele visited the northern areas and implemented the national gang unit which consists of officials from all over the country.

Some of the promises made include more job opportunities, better service delivery, health care, skills and education, and safer communities.
