Another elderly person has died while casting her vote at the Maqingwa primary school voting station in Bophelong in the Vaal. The incident happened on Wednesday afternoon as many South Africans continue to vote in the 2019 National and Provincial polls.

Gauteng African National Congress (ANC) secretary Jacob Khawe, who was called when this happened, has sent condolences to the family.

Earlier, the Electoral Commission CEO Sy Mamabolo said they had received reports that an elderly voter had died at a voting station in Elandspoort in Pretoria, but the circumstances around the incident is not yet known.

A deputy presiding officer also died overnight in the Eastern Cape due to ill health.

Addressing the media at the Elections Results Centre in Pretoria, Mamabolo said: “The IEC is sad to report the death of a deputy presiding officer in the EC due to illness overnight and extends its condolences to the family. The commission also received reports of an elderly voter who apparently died in a voting station in Tshwane earlier today. We extend the commissions condolences with the family. A vehicle accident involving election staff was reported but no serious injuries are reported.”

Meanwhile, Minister of Co-operative Governance Zweli Mkhize had to roll-up his sleeves and assist a voter who collapsed inside a voting station at Willowfontein outside Pietermaritzburg in KwaZulu-Natal. Mkhize also cast his vote at the same voting station.

He says some elderly people who are not well had gone to the voting station early and some even skipped breakfast.
