The Egyptian Embassy in South Africa has joined the condemnation of the attack on worshippers at a mosque in Verulam outside Durban.

It has been suggested that the attackers were of Egyptian origin.

One worshipper was killed and two injured after midday prayers at the mosque on Thursday. One of those injured has now been discharged from hospital.

Egyptian Embassy spokesperson, Ayman Walash says the nationality of the suspects have not been confirmed.

“There are ongoing investigations by authorities in South Africa and let us not jump to conclusions. We are following the developments of the investigations until reaching the crux of the attack.”

Walash says, “Egypt consistently and strongly condemns extremism and terrorism in all its forms. We express our deepest sympathy and heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and we wish them a speedy and full recovery to those who were injured.”
