Mining operations and efforts to recover the bodies of three missing workers at Lily Mine in Mpumalanga could resume before the end of this year.

Director-General of the Department of Mineral Resources, Thabo Mokoena has briefed the Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on progress at Lily Mine since the February 2016 disaster, caused by an underground subsidence.

He says business rescue practitioners have secured a buyer and are currently acquiring the ownership of the mine.

The Chairperson of the committee, Sahlulele Luzipo, says that the resumption of mining operations could bring closure to the families of the three missing workers, and also allow more than 600 former employees to return to work.
