EFF wants new acting NW Premier’s appointment rescinded

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema has warned the embattled North West Premier Supra Mahumapelo and the entire African National Congress provincial leadership that his party will approach the courts if the appointment of Finance MEC, Wendy Nelson, as acting premier is not rescinded.

Malema has rejected the appointment as unconstitutional. Mahumapelo appointed Nelson after he reneged on his pledge to resign as premier and instead announced that he was taking a leave of absence.

Mahumapelo has been under pressure to step down since recent protests against poor service delivery and alleged corruption in the province.

“The premier says and the ANC says that they have appointed an acting premier. It is unconstitutional. By the way, you can’t do that and we are going to write them a letter today (Thursday) to tell them that if they don’t remove that we are going make an urgent application to court.

“Because remember you can only appoint acting premier if the premier is out of the country or the premier cannot exercise his powers as a premier. So, the freedom is there to exercise his powers he is not overseas, he is here.”
