Embattled Nelson Mandela Bay Mayor Athol Trollip has just received another boost in his bid to survive a motion of no confidence in his leadership, as the African Independent Congress (AIC) has switched sides.

The motion of no confidence in Nelson Mandela Bay Metro Mayor Athol Trollip is unlikely to succeed following the decision of some parties to side with the Democratic Alliance (DA).

They include the Patriotic Front and the African Independent Congress.

Meanwhile, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and the DA have squared off in Port Elizabeth by hosting rallies ahead of the motion of no confidence in Trollip to be debated in the council on Thursday.

EFF leader, Julius Malema is adamant that his party will not rest until it removes Trollip.

Malema says they are determined to punish the DA for refusing to vote with the EFF during the recent debate on land expropriation with compensation in Parliament.

“If we punish them in Nelson Mandela in order to get the message to them, let it be done for as long as the matter of the land is restored firmly on the table. If Trollip wins, there’s no problem, there will not be a war, and it’s democracy in action. We must be there in our numbers to support our councillors,” adds Malema.
