The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in the Northern Cape is heading to court after its Mayor at the Thembelihle Municipality was voted out by the African National Congress (ANC) and the Freedom Front Plus on Monday.

The party says it views the move as illegal and wants the court to declare the sitting which appointed a new mayor null and void.

The EFF mayor Leonard Makena was sworn in in November following the local government elections. EFF Provincial Chairperson Aubrey Baartman says they will be filing an urgent court interdict on Wednesday.

“It is very clear that we will never accept this illegal and disruptive behaviour. We will take this matter on review and bring an urgent court interdict of making sure that this illegal meeting is declared null and void but also make sure that the municipality will function fully and deliver services to the community.”
