EFF in N West accuses ANC of delaying premier appointment

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in the North West has launched an attack on the African National Congress (ANC) for its delay to appoint a premier to succeed Supra Mahumapelo.

Mahumapelo resigned last month following violent protests, in which he was accused of corruption. A sitting of the legislature set for Friday has now been postponed since the ANC is still consulting its structures on the process of appointing a premier.

“The present acting premier doesn’t even have confidence on herself. She knows very well that her appointment was illegal. That’s why some of the MECs including some of the HODs and directors will not take her seriously. She’s unable to give them directions. We must not be surprised at the end of the financial year, to realise that North West was unable to spend the finances due to the fact that there is no one who is taking decisions. North West is leaderless, this is a total embarrassment,” says EFF Member of the Provincial Legislature Alfred Motsi.

ANC deployee to the North West Obed Bapela says there is no need for panic. “There is a takeover by the central government of all the functions of the premier in the North West. Whoever gets elected by the legislature as the premier, will just be there by decoration, because the powers and the functions are now under Section 100 (1B), until such time that those issues that were raised by the people of the North West province as suspicious, the issues of supply chain management, the issues of corruption, the issues of governance are sorted out under Section 100 (1B), the premier will just be there to cut ribbons.”
