EFF, DA denounce IEC’s inefficiency in the North West

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The Democratic Alliance (DA) and Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in the rural Moses Kotane Local Municipality in Mogwase in the North West say the IEC needs to improve the system of voting.

Both parties say they are disappointed about the way the IEC ran the national elections on Wednesday.

They say their inefficiency might have contributed to the alleged identified irregularities.

The EFF in Mogwase says it has launched several objections, with the aim of taking action against the IEC.

Democratic Alliance caucus leader in the Municipality, Jonathan Sekomeng says, “This is for us to learn. It seems everything is ready for elections, but come the elections day it seems as if even the election staff were told what to do. So the results can wave the other side.”

EFF Sub-regional co-ordinator Tshepang Madisa adds, “The IEC, the body that we thought is independent then it’s the one that is disappointing us. I don’t have any trust with the IEC anymore. There is a several objections that we have made in various voting stations. If it can course a re-run let it be.”

Objections with the IEC

The EFF at the JB Marks Municipality in Potchefstroom in the North West, has lodged objections with the IEC over alleged incidents of voting irregularities.

The party says the objections relate to some ANC members’ alleged double voting and some presiding officers’ failure to issue objection forms when they are needed.

EFF deputy secretary in the Dr Kenneth Kaunda region, Johanna Xaba, says they are questioning the impartiality of the IEC.

“Our people were never offered an opportunity to get the objection forms in terms of what transpired. The only person who got an objection form is a national leader who found people voting four times. One person getting four ballot papers at a time, which we have proof with that effect. And the other thing is that the situation where we found people from the ANC sitting in IEC where the boxes of the special votes where kept made us not to trust the independence of the IEC.”
