The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has condemned the suspension of 83 council workers and the subsequent dismissal of six others in Rustenburg in the North West.

The water and sanitation workers were suspended for allegedly contravening their code of conduct.

However, trade union South African Municipal Workers’ Union says the employees were protesting against corruption involving a contract for a fleet of vehicles for the alleged benefit of senior officials.

EFF provincial leader Thabo Sehloho says the municipality’s action has hampered service delivery in the area.

“ Especially on areas like Sunrise Park and other areas you will find out that there is a challenge on the supply of water, the municipality is failing at some stage the water is not clean and also the flowing of sewerage, it is a serious challenge. It will block and affect the health of our people.”
