EFF condemns recent electricity disconnections by Joburg Mayor

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) strongly condemns the recent unfair electricity disconnections that were unleashed all over Johannesburg by the newly elected Mayor of Johannesburg, Mpho Phalatse.

EFF says Phalatse, who is in her first ten days in office, has already demonstrated her willingness and ability to sell out and oppress poor residents in Johannesburg for the benefit of her white masters.

“Through her recent actions in discriminating when needed to provide the most basic service delivery needs to the poor, Phalatse has dismally failed and proclaimed war unto the poor and marginalised in Joburg.”

The City of Johannesburg Revenue Services department is currently sitting on a report that has the names and amounts of Mega-Customers and consumers who continue to default on utility payments and who have for donkey’s years now been defrauding the City of billions of rand.

“The recent public outburst by Phalatse that Diepkloof Zone 3 residents are criminals who are conducting illegal connections, meter bypassing and are allegedly buying electricity from ghost vendors, is disingenuous because those who connect electricity illegally do so because Eskom and the city are not providing them with electricity so they feel the need to take the initiative of securing a basic human right.”

The party says they observed her recent attacks of unlashing blackouts in townships like, but not limited to, Orlando, Pimville, Klipspruit, Dlamini, Naledi and Rockville.

“It is quite clear that since she remains ill-advised by Eskom who are protecting the interest of the rich, she will continue to turn a deaf ear and not hear the truth about how incompetent Eskom is.”
