EFF, ANC in tussle over torched stage

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The African National Congress says it’s concerned about the Economic Freedom Fighters’s allegations that members of the ruling party were involved in the torching of EFF tents and parts of a stage at Thokoza stadium on Gauteng’s East Rand.

The EFF says it had set up the structures, including a sound system, Friday night in preparation for the rally which its Gauteng premier candidate Dali Mpofu will address, but they were petrol-bombed Saturday morning.

ANC spokesperson Khusela Sangoni-Khawe says the ANC does not condone any act of violence or political intolerance. “We urge those who are affected by this matter to report it to the police. There are processes that have been put in place to ensure that all parties abide by the electoral code. As the ANC we will not hesitate to take action against any of our members who are implicated in such.”

Mpofu is adamant that his party is going to win and govern Gauteng after the May 7 elections

EFF spokesperson Mbuyiseni Ndlozi on the other hand maintains that the event is definitely going to continue. “Dali is meant to speak at 2pm, but we must send a strong message that we’ll be making it a point that we protect our event. We’ve communicated the burning down of our properties to the police.”

Meanwhile, EFF’s Mpofu is adamant that his party is going to win and govern Gauteng after the May 7 elections. Mpofu says the people of Gauteng are discontented with the ANC’s corruption, the Nkandla debacle and poor service delivery, which has seen many take to the streets in protests.

According to Mpofu, the EFF will continue to side with the vulnerable members of society and will become the voice of the poor.
